Arkansas CDL Arkansas Commercial Learner's Permit and Supervised Practice

The applicant must be at least 18, hold a valid driver license issued by Arkansas, and pass General Knowledge plus the tests required for the intended class, brake system, and CLP endorsements. The CLP is a precondition to a first CDL and to an upgrade that requires a skills test.

Arkansas's current CLP page states that the permit is valid for up to one year. After expiration, the holder must retake the general and endorsement knowledge tests. An older 2021 State Police rule describing a six-month permit predates the current one-year public rule and must not be used to shorten the current permit.

The CLP holder is not eligible to take the CDL skills test during the first 14 days after initial issuance. An appointment, completed ELDT, prior noncommercial experience, or employer request does not waive this federal minimum holding period.

On public roads the learner must be accompanied at all times by a driver with the proper CDL group and endorsements for the CMV. The supervisor must be physically present in the front seat next to the learner, or directly behind or in the first row behind the driver in a passenger vehicle, maintaining observation and direct supervision.

The learner must obey every class, E, K, L, M, N, O, P, V, X, and Z limit shown on the permit. P and S training cannot carry ordinary passengers, and tank training cannot carry cargo under the CLP X restriction.
