Class A, B, and C
Arkansas follows the federal vehicle groups. Class A covers a combination with a GCWR or actual gross combination weight of 26,001 pounds or more when the towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds. Class B covers a single vehicle at 26,001 pounds or more and such a vehicle towing no more than 10,000 pounds. Class C applies below those thresholds when the vehicle is designed for 16 or more people including the driver or carries hazardous material requiring placards or a listed select agent or toxin.
Minimum age and range
An Arkansas CLP holder must be at least 18. Drivers under 21 are limited to intrastate commercial operation and cannot exercise interstate or hazardous-material authority that requires age 21. Turning 21 changes eligibility only after the proper restriction or endorsement transaction is completed.
Before testing
Before Arkansas CDL testing, purchase the CDL-1 test packet from a DFA Revenue Office. Bring a valid Arkansas driver license and an accepted original proof of legal presence. At every testing-center visit, present the valid license, current CDL-1 packet, and proof of legal presence; bring legal name-change documents when the names do not match.
Issuance documents
For a new CDL, DFA lists proof of legal presence, proof of identity, the completed State Police testing packet, self-certification information, and a Social Security card for a person new to Arkansas. Required ELDT, medical qualification, TSA approval, and Class A human-trafficking training remain separate eligibility gates.
Credential term and fee
Arkansas's Act 753 notice states that, effective January 1, 2022, the CDL term changed to five years and the credential fee changed to $50. Testing, endorsement, TSA, duplicate, or third-party charges can be separate and must be checked at the time of the transaction.
