Alabama CDL Alabama Modernized CDL Skills Test and Vehicle Preparation

Alabama moved to the AAMVA modernized CDL skills test on July 1, 2025. The Vehicle Inspection and Basic Control Skills portions changed, while the Road Skills portion remained unchanged.

The current examination still consists of Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and Road Skills. An applicant must demonstrate safety-critical knowledge, controlled maneuvering, and lawful road operation in the prescribed sequence.

The modernized supplement uses Forward Stop, Straight-Line Backing, Forward Offset Tracking, and Reverse Offset Backing. Scoring evaluates boundaries, corrections, observations, final position, and unsafe acts under the examiner's directions.

The applicant supplies a safe and insured CMV matching the requested class, passenger group, coupling system, transmission, and brake authority. Testing with limited equipment or a smaller passenger group can create restrictions.

The current inspection emphasizes safety-critical components and updated terminology. The applicant identifies or demonstrates required items for the actual vehicle and explains the condition or safety purpose when requested.
