Alabama CDL Knowledge Testing, Fees, and Issuance Costs

All applicants take General Knowledge and add Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Passenger, School Bus, Tank, Doubles/Triples, and Hazardous Materials modules as required. Federal standards require at least 80 percent correct on the applicable test.

ALEA's current requirements page lists a $25 commercial testing fee and states that checks are not accepted. This testing fee is separate from the CLP, skills-test, class credential, medical, training, and TSA costs.

A first-time or upgrading applicant takes the skills test by appointment and ALEA lists a $20 skills-test fee. The applicant also brings proof of insurance and a vehicle that safely represents the requested class and endorsements.

ALEA currently lists $66.25 for Class A, $56.25 for Class B, $36.25 for Class C, and $36.25 for the commercial learner license. Local legislation may make some county totals slightly higher, so the current issuing office remains controlling.

Alabama does not publish a complete live item distribution for every knowledge module. The application's 50-, 25-, and 20-question sets are internal practice configurations, not a claim to duplicate a live ALEA exam form.
