Alabama CDL Endorsements and State Restriction Codes

Alabama uses N for tank vehicles, H for hazardous materials, P for passenger vehicles, X for tank plus hazardous materials, S for school buses, and T for doubles or triples. The endorsement supplements but never replaces the correct Class A, B, or C base credential.

Only N, P, and S may be placed on a CLP. P and S learners carry the no-passenger restriction except for persons permitted by the supervised-training rule, while an N learner carries the no-cargo-in-tank restriction.

E, L, M, N, O, P, V, X, and related restrictions reflect transmission, brake, passenger group, coupling, learner, medical, or test-vehicle limits. The vehicle selected for testing determines which skills and equipment were demonstrated.

ALEA also lists Q for power brakes only, R for mechanical signs, T for built-up pedals, U for a built-up seat, and other non-CDL vision, mirror, hearing, hardship, interlock, or equipment codes. Alabama restriction T is not endorsement T for doubles or triples.

K limits commercial operation to intrastate commerce. V records a medical variance. Neither restriction disappears because a driver changes employers, crosses a state line unexpectedly, or carries a paper medical document.
