Recognize Alabama serious, major, railroad-crossing, and out-of-service disqualifications while maintaining medical and credential compliance.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and Alabama commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

01

Serious offenses

Alabama lists excessive speed of 15 mph or more, reckless driving, improper or erratic lane change, following too closely, fatal-crash violations, driving without the required CDL or class, and prohibited handheld-phone violations as serious offenses. Two within three years cause 60 days and three cause 120 days of disqualification.

02

Major offenses

Major offenses include alcohol or controlled-substance operation, 0.04 percent or greater in a CMV, refusal, leaving a crash, specified felonies, driving while disqualified, and negligent CMV fatality. A first event generally causes one year, or three years while transporting placarded HazMat; a second causes lifetime disqualification.

03

Railroad crossings

Specified railroad-highway crossing convictions cause 60 days for the first, 120 days for the second, and one year for a third or subsequent conviction under Alabama's published CDL disqualification schedule.

04

Out-of-service orders

Violating an out-of-service order produces escalating commercial disqualifications, with stricter later consequences and separate placarded-HazMat treatment. A carrier dispatch or delivery deadline does not authorize operation during the order.

05

Continuing compliance

The holder must maintain electronic medical qualification, variances, proper class and endorsements, TSA approval for H or X, and every restriction. A hardship license does not authorize commercial driving, and an ordinary license reinstatement does not automatically restore CDL authority.

06

Exam focus

Apply each rule to the exact Alabama credential, vehicle, age, domicile, medical status, test stage, date, cargo, passenger use, and route. Current ALEA and ALDOR pages control time-sensitive procedures; the 24-page modernized supplement replaces the old inspection and basic-control testing sections from July 1, 2025.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
